Avoid auto repair—use your GPS wisely!

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents and, consequently, of auto repairs. Did you know that navigation systems rank among the most common sources of distraction for Canadian drivers? That’s why their use is subject to certain laws and restrictions. Here at Auto Value, we recommend that you keep safety in mind whenever your GPS is in use. Follow our experts’ 10 tips to ensure you make it to your destination safe and sound!

When installing your GPS

1. Secure the display to a mount designed for the task;

2. Place the display to the right of your steering wheel (either on the dashboard or near the interior rear-view mirror) so that you’re able to easily glance at it;

3. Make sure that your GPS device doesn’t obstruct your view of the road or hinder your ability to control your vehicle;

4. Never place a GPS device in front of an airbag;

5. Remove your GPS each time you exit your vehicle to prevent theft.

Before you leave

6. Program your GPS with the exact address of your destination, including the postal code;

7. Make sure that the coordinates are indeed those of your destination; once on the road, you’ll no longer be in a position to correct an erroneous input. Otherwise, pull over in a safe location to reconfigure your itinerary;

8. Always install the recommended software updates on your device to ensure it accounts for the latest road conditions (detours, road configurations, roadwork, etc.) when suggesting a route;

9. Adjust the volume so that you can clearly understand spoken directions;

10. Keep your device’s battery charged and always bring the charger with you.

Distractions and car repairs go hand in hand

According to a study conducted by Quebec’s auto insurance board (SAAQ), cigarette smoking is the number one distraction behind the wheel, followed by hand-held cellphone use. Other top offenders include eating and drinking, using hands-free or screened devices (e.g. GPS), and personal grooming (e.g. shaving or applying makeup). Yep, you read that correctly!

Did you know?

Road behaviour experts recognize 3 different types of driving distractions:

1. Visual distractions take your eyes off the road

2. Manual distractions take your eyes off the wheel

3. Cognitive distractions take your mind off the task at hand (this is what we call “being in a daze”)
