Rustproofing

RUSTPROOFING, A TREATMENT NOT TO OVERLOOK

While not mandatory, rustproofing is crucial to the longevity of your vehicle. Even though newer cars are built better and more durable, they’re still vulnerable to corrosion. Rust can affect any metal component, and by the time you notice the corrosion, it’s often too late to prevent damage to your vehicle that may pose a safety hazard.

To help avoid any inconvenience caused by rust, Auto Value Certified Service Centers take the time to inspect your vehicle for signs of corrosion. To prevent this type of deterioration, our Auto Value Certified Service Centers repair shops can apply a rustproofing treatment to your car. By taking care of your vehicle, you’ll maintain its safety and market value.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

If I don’t see rust, does that mean I don’t have any?

Rust starts off microscopic and, therefore, isn’t always visible to naked eye. It also often builds up in hard-to-see places such as the insides of doors, the rear fenders, the chassis and other spots. This is why it’s recommended that you rustproof your car annually to prevent corrosion in the first place.

Why is my car rusting?

There are several factors that can increase the risk of rust formation. Common ones include:

  • Salt and calcium, which are spread on the roads in winter to prevent snow and ice buildup.
  • Air pollution and acid rain, which are very corrosive.
  • Rapid changes in temperature, especially from cold, dry weather to hot, humid conditions. Heat causes metal to expand, allowing humidity to penetrate the surface and trigger corrosion.
  • Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn’t only clean and take care of your vehicle in winter, but rather all year long. Winter conditions often instigate corrosion, but rust can proliferate in summer.

So which rustproofing treatment should I choose?

There are a number of different rustproofing treatments available. It all depends on your vehicle and preferences. You can choose between liquid oil, semi-solid oil, grease-based or permanent treatments, or electronic rust protection.

Keep in mind that the treatment should be applied to a dry vehicle to maximize its efficacy.
